Summer Pet Care – Top Tips to Keep Your Pet Happy and Healthy

Dog drinking water on a sunny day – summer hydration for pets

As summer days and heat rise, our pets are also feeling the heat along with us. Summer is fun, sunshine, and playtime—but it also introduces new pet owners to challenges. Heatstroke and parasites are but two of the issues that confront pets if precautions are not made. If you have a dog, cat, or other pet, you need to modify their summertime regimen.

These are some of the greatest advice to keep your pet safe, happy, and healthy throughout the year throughout summer.

1. Hydration Is Non-Negotiable

As with humans, dogs require more water during summer. Dehydration and heatstroke can strike fast when the weather is warm. Position new clean water throughout your place all day and every day, and think about setting bowls of water in several locations around your dwelling and outside.

If you’re going on walks or outings, take a portable Pet water bottle or collapsible bowl. For an added treat, freeze pet-safe broth into ice cubes—they're great for hydration and fun to chew!

2. Beat the Heat with Shade and Shelter

Pets warm up so rapidly, particularly dogs with thick coats or short faces (such as bulldogs and pugs). Outside, make sure your pet is always in the shade. A tree, an umbrella, or an open-air Doghouse in a shaded area can be refuge.

Don't walk your dog in the middle of the day—early morning or evening is best. And, always check pavement temperatures with the palm of your hand; if too hot for you, it's too hot for their pads.

3. Pay Attention to Their Behaviour in the Heat

You will notice things about your pet in the summer—loss of appetite, lethargy, or restlessness are all signs that your pet is overheating. Catch these early warning signs and act fast. Prolonged panting, drooling, and confusion are warning signs of heatstroke and need to be treated immediately by a veterinarian.

Be alert and familiar with your pet's typical habits so that you will be able to detect problems early.".

4. Summer Grooming: Less Is Often More

Grooming plays a major part in keeping your pet cool. Much as shaving your dog's fur might seem like a good idea, the coats of most breeds work as heat insulation. Instead of shaving, focus on brushing them thoroughly to shed off loose hair and prevent matting that causes heat to be trapped.

Invest in a quality conditioner and shampoo that will work well with your pet's skin type. Seek out gentle formulas with oatmeal or aloe vera to calm itchiness caused by dry summer skin or bug bites. Bathe with lukewarm water only—never cold, as it will be a shock to their system.

5. Prioritize Dental Care Year-Round

Although not necessarily a summer issue, dental hygiene is still crucial—particularly when pets will be chomping on sticks, bones, or hard dog biscuits in the outdoors. Neglecting oral hygiene has severe potential consequences, including heart and kidney illness.

Brush with pet toothbrushes or Dental chews to keep gums and teeth healthy. Healthy gums and teeth will also have their breath smelling fresh, so those summer cuddles are a whole lot sweeter!

6. Be on the Lookout for Parasites

Summer is also flea, tick, and mosquito season. Not only are those pests annoying to your pet, but they harbor extremely serious disease like Lyme disease and heartworm. Use preventatives that have been vet-approved and inspect your pet regularly for signs of infestation.

Don't forget to clean your yard: mow tall grass, don't leave standing water, and wash bedding regularly.

7. Pets Traveling? Plan Ahead

Whether a lake weekend or road trip, pet travel is planned. Never leave an animal in a parked car—not even for a minute. Temperatures inside a car are increasingly hotter, even with a cracked window.

Bring along a pet package with essentials like water, food, bowls, leash, toys, and a first-aid kit. Carry their vaccination records with you, and visit your vet before heading out to ensure that your pet is fit for the journey.

8. Fun in the Sun—Safely!

Outdoor play is wonderful, but in moderation. Swimming is a wonderful method for cooling dogs and maintaining their health. Just ensure they're supervised and swimming in clean, safe water. Some dogs are good swimmers, while others may require a life jacket.

Do not allow your pet to drink from lakes or pools because the water can have harmful chemicals or bacteria. Bathe your pet after swimming off of Chlorine, salt, or dust.

9. Modify Their Diet

In the hot weather of summer, your animal may not need the same number of calories as in winter. Talk to your veterinarian about diet adjustments if you notice weight gain or reduced activity. Light meals, frozen treats, and plenty of fresh fruits (such as watermelon or blueberries—safe in moderation) will keep them satisfied and cool.

Never succumb to the temptation of offering human food to your pet that is toxic to animals—especially on BBQ Day. No chocolate, grapes, onions, or bones!

10. Create a Cool Safe Home Environment

At home, keep your home cool by using fans or air conditioning. If your pet spends the day alone at home, provide a cool, shaded place for them to lie down. Cooling mats or frozen water bottles wrapped in towels will provide relief.

For extra comfort, try pet-friendly cooling clothing in the shape of vests or Bandanas—just ensure that they are not too tight or wet for extended amounts of time.

Final Thoughts

Summer is playtime and time with your pet, but also time of responsibility. From heat shelter and water to grooming, dental care, and paying attention to pet behavior, the little things do count in keeping your friend safe and content. Make this summer one to remember for all the right reasons—with wags, purrs, and plenty of sun-filled playtime.
